Dental Bridge- Solution for replacing missing teeth & filling gaps in Potomac .
Dental Bridges
Tooth decay, injury, infection, and gum disease are all contributors to tooth loss. Teeth may fall out naturally or need to be professionally extracted by a dentist. Regardless of the underlying reason, tooth loss can be embarrassing for the patient and cause both cosmetic and functional problems. Missing teeth may cause gaps in the smile and the surrounding tissue may shift or become slack causing the facial features to take on a different appearance. Changes in appearance may cause feelings of self-consciousness or changes in self-esteem. Teeth surrounding the missing tooth may also shift. Misaligned teeth may change the appearance of the smile and require the use of dental braces to straighten. There may also be changes in the bite and jaw positioning. Changes to teeth and jaw alignment may cause problems with normal chewing and speech.
Tooth loss must be treated to decrease these detrimental side effects. Dentists at our Potomac dental office will identify and develop treatment plans for issues subsequent to tooth loss.
Treatment options for replacing missing teeth include:
-Dental bridges
The dental bridge helps to provide structure and strength for the tissues of the jaw and face. A dental bridge typically requires two appointments at our Potomac dental office. A bridge typically consists of three dental crowns. One crown is placed on each of the two teeth surrounding the missing tooth which holds in place the crown for the missing tooth. During the initial visit, the two teeth next to the missing tooth are prepped for the crowns. This involves filing and shaping so that the crowns will fit tightly in place. A mold of the teeth is made and shipped to an outside laboratory where the dental bridge is created. The dentist may provide the patient with a temporary bridge that can be used until the permanent bridge is ready. At the next visit, the permanent bridge will be adhered in place.
There are two kinds of fixed dental bridges:
-A conventional bridge uses three crowns with the two outer crowns supporting the crown in place of the missing tooth
-A Maryland bridge holds a crown in place of the missing tooth using a metal band that is attached to the back of two surrounding teeth. A Maryland bridge is best used when the surrounding teeth are strong and healthy.
A removable dental bridge is a treatment option for a patient that does not want to have a permanent bridge cemented into place. A removable bridge may be easier to clean since it can be removed.
Proper care of a dental bridge involves regular brushing and flossing and may include special flossing techniques. The patient should also have regular professional examinations and professional teeth cleaning. Call our Potomac dental office to schedule an appointment.
