Causes of tooth loss include:

-Extreme tooth decay

-Facial Injury or fracture

-Infection

-Advanced gum disease

Teeth may fall out or need to be removed by a dentist. Whatever the cause, tooth loss is often embarrassing for the patient and creates both cosmetic and functional problems. The teeth, gums and jawbone are the supporting structures for the lips, cheeks and lower face. Loss of these structures gives an appearance of premature aging and for many people causes feelings of self-consciousness. Remaining teeth may become misaligned following tooth loss and need treatment with braces to correct. There may also be changes in the bite and jaw positioning which often lead to problems with normal chewing and speech. Dentures are a treatment option for tooth loss available at our Potomac dental office.

Dentures treatment typically requires two visits to our Potomac dental office. During the initial visit the dentist will measure the size of the jaw and mouth and make a model of the jaw. The model and measurements are given to a laboratory to create the dentures with a custom fit.

Two types of dentures are available:

Full dentures – Used when all of the teeth are missing in either the upper or lower jaw. Full dentures are created to fit against the gums. Full dentures may require a long period of adjustment to everyday wear. There may be problems with chewing and speech that need to be addressed.

Partial dentures – Used when only some of the teeth are missing and the remaining teeth and jaw are healthy and can provide support for the denture. Partial dentures tend to have a shorter period of adjustment than full dentures.

Good oral hygiene practices should always be followed when wearing dentures. This includes:

-Brushing the surface of the gums, tongue and palate before and after wearing the dentures

-Cleaning or soaking dentures daily or after every meal using a special cleaning solution and avoiding harsh detergents that could damage the dentures

-Rinsing the mouth with warm water or cleaning solution when dentures are removed
