Gingevitis and Periodontitis treatment. Periodontal/Gum disease Prevention and Cure in Potomac. STOP Red Swollen, Bleeding Gums Today.
Are You in Risk of Gum Disease/Periodontitis?
The occurrence of gum disease is widespread(3 out 4 adults affected by age 35) and varies in severity from mild gingivitis to severe periodontitis. The gums, teeth, and jaw bone are all affected by gum disease. Dentists at our Potomac office diagnose gum disease during professional exams and teeth cleaning. Early gum disease is the easiest to treat. If gum disease is identified during an office visit, an individual treatment plan will be developed.
The first stage of gum disease is gingivitis. Gingivitis can be treated and reversed with good oral hygiene practices. Symptoms of gingivitis include:
-Extreme redness of the gums
-Swollen gums
-Gums that bleed easily
Bacteria found in plaque attack the gums and cause gingivitis. Plaque is a layer of food particles and bacteria that develops on the teeth and gums. Practicing good oral hygiene in the form of brushing and flossing regularly removes much of the plaque and bacteria found in the mouth. If plaque is allowed to build up on the teeth and gums it will cause tooth decay and gum irritation. Plaque and bacteria may travel below the gum line and cause inflammation and infection in the area. The gums may begin to recede and lead to breakdown of the bone and tissue around the teeth. Gingivitis can also advance to periodontitis.
Periodontitis is advanced gum disease. Patients with periodontitis have various stages of breakdown of the tissue and bone around the teeth. It is possible for the breakdown of bone and tissue to cause the tooth to become loose in the socket and even fall out.
Contributing factors to gum disease include:
-Smoking tobacco products like cigarettes and cigars
-Certain inherited genetic factors
-Medications
-Diabetes
-Hormones
-Diet that is nutritionally poor
Gum disease can be reversed and/or prevented through good oral hygiene practices. This includes brushing and flossing at least twice a day. Gum disease prevention also involves regular visits to the dentist every six months for professional exam and teeth cleaning. Call our Potomac office for an appointment.
Depending on a level, to restore beautiful smile after gum disease you might need one or multiple cosmetic procedures: dental implants, dental veneers, mini-dental implants, full or partial dentures.
