Periodontal Gum Disease Treatment & Prevention- Deep Scaling and Root Planning in Potomac
Deep Root Planing and Scaling
Root planing and scaling are deep cleaning methods for treating gum disease that are performed at our Potomac dental office. Plaque is a layer of food particles and bacteria that builds up on the surface of the teeth and gums. The bacteria interact with the carbohydrate in food and create an acid which wears down the hard enamel surface of the tooth. Bacteria can also travel below the gum line and affect the tooth root. When plaque is not removed from the surface of the teeth, it can build up and harden into a yellowish or brown substance called calculus and tartar. Scaling removes calculus that has built up on the tooth surface. Root planing smoothes irregular patches on the root surface where plaque tends to adhere. Root planing also removes any remaining tartar and calculus.
Both manual and ultrasonic hand tools are used in root planing and scaling. These tools are available in various sizes. Ultrasonic scalers are typically used to initially remove large bits of calculus from the surface of the root and tooth. Manual hand scalers are then used to remove any calculus not removed by the ultrasonic scaler. Planers are then used to smooth the surface of the tooth and root.
Benefits of root planning and scaling include:
-Reduced inflammation of the gum tissue
-Decreased gaps in between the teeth and gums
-Plaque control
In order to prevent periodontal gum disease from recurring after scaling and root planning it is necessary to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly at home. Ongoing regular exams and professional teeth cleaning are also a part of preventing periodontal disease from recurring. Call today to schedule an appointment at our Potomac office.
