Anti-Snoring Devices

Snoring affects not only the patient, but also other family members sleeping nearby. Snoring can cause disruption of important R.E.M sleep when the body is in its heaviest sleep mode and thus affect both quality and duration of sleep. When sleep is disrupted, it is common to feel tired and sluggish upon waking and possibly feel this way for the duration of the day. Behavior and performance in both professional and social environments may be affected by lack of sleep. Stimulants like caffeine may be used to attempt to “awaken” the mind and body. Overuse of stimulants can also be a problem. Disrupted and shortened sleep cycles can also have long term health consequences. Recent studies indicate an association between conditions like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes, and lack of sleep. Dentists at our Potomac dental office are knowledgeable about different anti-snoring procedures. Call today for an appointment.

The actual sound produced during snoring starts with air passing in and out the lungs during deep breathing. The jaw becomes relaxed during sleep and deep breathing causes vibrations in the soft tissues around the tongue and jaw. The vibration is what is referred to as snoring. Treatments for snoring include surgery and anti-snoring devices like Silent Nite. Silent Nite is an intra oral snoring prevention device offered at our Potomac dental office. The device works by expanding the amount of space available in the airway during deep breathing. A larger amount of space decreases the velocity of the air and thus decreases the vibrations and resulting sound of snoring. Silent Nite is composed of two plastic pieces that are molded to fit the upper and lower teeth. The pieces are held together by a hinge that moves the lower jaw forward while sleeping to increase the airway space.

Patients that use Silent Nite indicate that the device is comfortable when worn and movement of the jaw is not negatively affected during sleep. The device is compact and adjustable so that the patient experiences maximum comfort while wearing the device. The only negative feedback provided by patients is that there may be some temporary stiffness of the jaw upon waking. However, this is quickly alleviated during normal activity and not an on-going problem. Patients with dentures are not candidates for treatment with Silent Nite because the patient’s teeth must support the device.

Silent Nite allows both the patient and their loved ones to get a full night of restful sleep. Call our Potomac office today to schedule an appointment.
